                    Our Handmade Goat Milk Soap

Goat milk soaps are good for the skin and face, and have been famous for thousands of years for their moisturizing properties. White Egret Farm Soaps are hand made from natural ingredients including goat milk, hand rendered fats, sodium hydroxide (soda ash) and, essential oils.  In historical times soaps were made by stirring rendered animal fats with wood ashes.  When isolated fats are heated with a caustic alkali metal, soap is created by a reaction called  "saponification". Generally, the alkali can be either sodium or potassium salts, both of which are found in wood ashes. At White Egret Farm we utilize the fat from the cattle and hogs we raise for natural meat and render (purify) this fat into lard and tallow by hand. In this way we can assure you that there are no potentially allergenic preservatives in your soap. Most people don’t realize  that commercial soaps contain BHA, BHT, and other preservatives in their fat component.

Our method also preserves the natural glycerines in the fat, which along with the milk act as moisturizing agents in the soap. In the United States commercial processes for soap were pioneered by Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati in the mid 1800’s.  These gentlemen discovered an easy separation technique for glycerine. They then began selling the glycerine as a separate high value ingredient. Since that time, consumers have purchased glycerine as a typical component of moisturizing lotions.

Natural soaps are best when aged, the older the better.  Age hardens the soap  and makes it less likely to melt away in the shower or bathtub.  A treasured bridal gift during the pioneer era was soap that had been aged for one year.

White Egret Farm soaps are not milled.  During the soap making and curing process natural minerals in the soap rise to the surface and dry into a white film.  In commercial soap making this film is milled off so that the soap appears to be one homogenous color.  We think these minerals add to the cleaning and rinsing process.  You’ll find that our soaps do not leave soap films, and have an extremely long useful life.

Even people with the most sensitive skin can safely use our natural soaps. We hope you enjoy them.
